Why This Page Matters
Too many families in Frederick are living in toxic conditions caused by black mold — and there are currently no laws to protect them. This page exists to push for change, explain your rights, and guide you through the legal steps if you’re stuck in a dangerous home.
🛑There Are No Mold Protection Laws in Frederick
Frederick County and the City of Frederick have no laws requiring landlords to test for mold, clean it up properly, or notify tenants before moving in. Tenants are left to live in toxic, unlivable conditions — and landlords still collect rent without penalty. That needs to change.
What We’re Demanding
We are calling on the Frederick City Council and Frederick County officials to pass laws that:
Require mold inspections before leasing
Ban landlords from renting out homes with mold
Protect tenants from retaliation when reporting mold
Require certified mold cleanup — not just paint-over jobs
Penalize landlords who ignore life-threatening maintenance
Mold Isn’t Just Dirty — It’s Dangerous.
Mold exposure can cause permanent damage to your brain, lungs, immune system, and your children’s development.
Jessica Johnson and her family have lived this nightmare firsthand—losing their health, their pet, and their peace while being ignored by those responsible.
This Petition Demands:
That Frederick City and County create real mold laws that protect tenants
That landlords be required to fix mold-related damage before collecting rent or Section 8 payments
That the county provides mold testing resources for low-income and subsidized families
That tenants have a clear way to report and seek protection without retaliation
